Why Visit Gangotri?
Mythological Significance: According to legend, Goddess Ganga descended to Earth to cleanse the sins of King Bhagirath’s ancestors. Lord Shiva contained her in his matted hair to soften her powerful flow—thus giving rise to the Ganga.
Spiritual Purification: Pilgrims believe that a dip in the holy waters of the Ganga at Gangotri cleanses the soul of past sins and brings blessings for the future.
Gangotri Temple Highlights
The Gangotri Temple, built in the 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, is made of white granite and stands peacefully beside the river.
Inside, the temple houses a statue of Goddess Ganga, and the spiritual vibe here is unmatched.
The temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya and closes on Diwali.
The Real Source – Gaumukh Glacier
While Gangotri is the pilgrimage site, the actual source of the river is the Gaumukh Glacier, located about 18 km uphill from Gangotri.
Trekkers and devotees often visit Gaumukh to witness the awe-inspiring glacier that feeds the mighty Ganga.
How to Reach
The nearest major town is Uttarkashi. From there, it’s a scenic drive to Gangotri, offering snow-capped peaks, alpine forests, and serene views.
