Nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarkashi district, Yamunotri is the origin of the revered Yamuna River and one of the four sacred shrines of the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. It holds immense spiritual value for devotees and offers a tranquil setting for introspection.
Why Visit Yamunotri?
Spiritual Significance: According to Hindu mythology, Yamuna is the daughter of the Sun God, Surya, and the sister of Yama (the god of death). A visit here is said to free devotees from the fear of death.
River Origin: Though the actual source of the Yamuna is the Champasar Glacier (at 4,421 meters), pilgrims visit the Yamunotri Temple, which is more accessible.
Divine Connection: Bathing in the sacred waters of the Yamuna is believed to cleanse sins and grant spiritual merit.
Temple Experience & Highlights
The Yamunotri Temple was built in the 19th century by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur.
It houses a black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna, and the temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya and closes on Yama Dwitiya (Bhai Dooj).
Pilgrims cook rice and potatoes tied in cloth in Surya Kund, a natural hot spring, and offer them to the deity as prasad.
The Journey
The last motorable stop is Janki Chatti. From there, a 5–6 km trek leads to the temple, passing through scenic trails surrounded by rugged cliffs and waterfalls.
Best Time to Visit
May to early November is ideal, as the temple remains closed during the harsh winter season.
